University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I have met a lot of like-minded people; the city is a great place and full of intelligent people. I am having the time of my life here at Leeds University, the only let-down is the student accommodation.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The facilities are brilliant, sport-wise is fantastic. The lecture halls are really good except for the Roger Stevens and EC Stoner buildings which become very congested and so difficult to move from one of your lecture halls to another. On the whole, its fantastic.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
I am unsure of the support services provided here, as far as I am aware, there is not much in the way of support. Despite that, its probably not too difficult to work out where you need to go to get support; emails are sent out occasionally informing us of what is available.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
I love mainstream pop music so venues like Pulse and The Terrace are great places to be if you want to expose yourself to that type of music. Essentials shop provides with all your essentials! Pasty shop does what it says on the tin, great pasties.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
I am from Essex and moving to the north is definitely a different experience. There are many things Leeds has in common with Essex; nights out are quite similar but it is more the cultural aspect of things that can make it difficult to adjust to. You realise northerners in general can be quite different to southerners. In my spare time I involve myself in a lot of football related events and music events.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
I have joined the football and rugby society and have met lots of interesting people through the societies. There are many socials that also take place.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
There is a really good support network and students get plenty of contact time with tutors. I was struggling a bit with the course at the beginning and I corresponded daily with my personal tutor who supported me, students get a lot of attention in that respect, almost as if it were pastoral care. Sometimes the breadth of the subject can become overwhelming but modules do become more specific and catered to your personal interests when you enter 2nd and 3rd year. The transition between 6th form/college and university does bring up an immediate cause for concern but with the support provided, you get over it quite quickly.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
We have lectures every week on job prospects so I am not too anxious about finding work after graduating. Leeds university also has a refutable reputation so that will definitely go a long way in impressing employers.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I live in Central Village which is close to the main campus and The Edge which is extremely convenient for someone who takes part in a lot of sports and fitness activities. The accommodation is too overpriced as with all student halls.
