University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
My experience only entails about a year and a half so i am no expert. Nonetheless, the time ive spent in Bangor has allowed me to grow as a person. The studies have/are going great, I have made friends for life that i get to see on a regular basis and im learning new skills all the time. It may sound exaggerated, but university has changed me in the best way possible.
I could not imagine my life without Bangor University.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The university facilites vary throughout the different schools. I am content with out departments resources, as they provide working lab equipment, plentyfully spaced lecture rooms and aid with any problems we may have with assignments.
However, as we are a rather large class of students and the practicals of the biomedical science course are partially the same as the practicals of the medical science course, practicals are usually conducted in pairs. This can be interpreted as a lack of resources. I on the other hand see it as very useful, as this improves the quality of results obtained from each practical group and improves student relations in the course.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
It is excellent. Like mentioned, the tutors are supportive in all academic aspects. Several libraries are open to all students complete with computer rooms, excess printers and conference rooms. Several study areas are offered too, found in pontio and on campus.
The personal support is present too. Each student is assigned a personal tutor for any personal questions or requests. We are regularly sent emails regarding personal counciling, mental health awareness, meetings to discuss mental health and workshops to deal with exam anxiety, and several other issues (i.e. counciling for addictions, depression etc).
I am thankful to say that i do not have experience with these counciling services, as i was always able to rely on my friends to provide these for me, but it is extremely reassuring to know they are available.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The student union is a highly active body in our university community. They are keen on student feedback and continously labor towards improving conditions for us students. They conduct surveys and organise amazing events such as the yearly serendipity fair.
I myself am not involved in the student union as I am currently in my second year of biomedical sciences and am struggling to find time for all the things I would want to take part in. I am already participating in several societies and a long term community project.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Bangor is a seaside town with a very high student population. The majority of the students are international, so just about anyone can find their "clique". Because the town is relatively small, you often come across people you know, which gives it a very friendly and communal feeling. The center of the town is the university, where a freshly built section (Pontio) provides the heart of action. Here many lectures take place, movies are shown in a on-site cinema, perfomances are given and events carried out.
Bangors nightlife isnt too diverse but thanks to student organised events, as well as a student run night club something fun is always happening somewhere.
A large array of restaurants and pubs can be found scattered throughout the town, so its easy to switch up any sort of routine.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
2 words:
So. Many!
The yearly serendipity fair acts as a fair ground which advertises the range of societies and clubs. Everything from casual fun DJ societies to music appreciation clubs to competitive sporting and something called underwater hockey (?).
No clubs have any requirements to join and all are welcoming of new participants. The clubs and societies are what make out the Bangor University community.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Our lecturers are all thankful and open to feedback from the students. Each of them are sympathetic and active in their field of study, which is noticable in their lectures. They tend to relate academic content to their specialisation, making their lectures all the more engaging.
We are regularly provided with course evaluation forms that allow us to give writen anomynous to each of our modules.
The least favourite part of the teaching methods to me is the guest lecturers. They are informative and it is amazing to get insight into their field. However, occasionally it is obvious that they are not comfortable speaking infront of the class, which impacts their ability to convey content. However, i am aware that everyone needs to practice lecturing and that it is a difficult task. Therefore, an occasional guest lecturer isnt as bad as i may have made it out to be.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
12
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
This is currently my second year at Bangor University. I´ve had the privilege of living in halls last year.
Staff from the school of medical sciences (the department responsible for my course) as well as several external groups regularly contact me with opportunites for further education, work experiences/internships, work shops and seminars. The vast majority of these offers are free of charge and always welcome new participants.
This gives each student the unique virtue of building their target resumee and developing skills that they deem most important for their future career path. Thanks to the broad range of offers provided by the University of Bangor I have participated in several community projects, partook in team building excercises, observed seminars of gues lecturers and enjoyed a array of societies teaching transferable skills.
