I was nervous about coming to university, but when I arrived, I straight away felt welcomed. The staff at the university are all lovely and understanding, and they offer a lot of support and guidance when you need it. I also really like the course I chose and find the facilities available for me to use are of amazing standard, many of which I have never used before (such as wood and metal work) - I find the opportunity and encouragement to try all this equipment exciting. My only struggle when I was starting was understanding my time table and where everything was, and I found when asking staff I didn’t receive much guidance on how to understand my time table - however, after attending my first few sessions everything was thoroughly explained and made sense to me. Overall, I have had nothing but a positive experience since starting my studies at York St John.

I really like that my course is mainly in-class based. We get 6 hours of dedicated studio time a week with an academic tutor, however I appreciate that we also have access to the studio outside of timetable hours which I really find useful. I have learned lots of new techniques and skills in my first 9 weeks here that I had never experimented with before. As well, the lecture content is all new to me and I have learnt about theories I have never heard of before - I find all this new information exciting and interesting and I am excited to look into everything more in more detail. The staff on the fine art course are all lovely, and they offer so much help and guidance when you need it - I have nothing bad to say about this course.

I find that city residence is not good value for the money I am paying. At nearly £6k a year I would have expected a more cleaner space when moving - however I was met with mouldy windowsills, blocked shower drains, marks and chips on the walls and mould growing in the shower on the first day of moving. As well, the heating in the flat does not work very well, and if it does it only stays on for 5 minutes maximum which can become very cold during the night. However, other aspects such as the room size, decorations, communal spaces etc are all up to standard for me, and I find them to be good value for the money I pay.

Because of this University’s size, it means you get more one on one support with tutors. They organise many check ins for your work and for you personally so that you can do well on the course. Only downside is that I haven’t had a reading week.

We are given a good amount of time in and out of University. Don’t think that Art is an easy subject, because there is a lot of content and skills to learn. It is fairly easy to speak to lecturers considering how many students they teach.
