University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
My university experience so far is satisfying, rewarding, providing the right kind of challenge. I am happy with my studies. In addition to my academic studies I am involved in the Student Ambassador work, which gives me a wealth of communication opportunities while providing a flexible paid position.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The university's facilities are good in general, excellent in some specific areas like Engineering.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Excellent support is provided both academically and in terms of pastoral care. All students who need it can get help with maths (this is called MASH tutoring in Greenwich), writing essays, referencing, career advice through specialised career advisers and personal tutors, disability management and general well-being problems if they arise.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Student Union is robust and, most importantly, does what it is supposed to do.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
All engineering courses are run at the Medway Campus of the University of Greenwich (Kent). As I live in London, the location is not particularly good for me. However, on balance, my study is going well and I am happy with my course. My travel is helped by the heavily subsidised coach between Greenwich and Medway (slightly more than £2 if you buy a card with 20 journeys). For those students who live at the University Halls in Medway, the location is perfect, as on the one hand, they live on campus, and, on the other hand, they can easily travel to London, if they need it.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
The Student Union societies are quite vibrant. In the Medway Campus, the Student Union covers not only University of Greenwich students, but also many University of Kent students and some University of Canterbury students. So, the diversity of the student population is immense and this is reflected in the diversity of the student societies (anecdotally, the online gaming society is the most popular one). In the Medway Campus the sport facilities are good, those who need specialised sports facilities like football pitches can travel to the Avery Hill Campus of the University of Greenwich where t he sports facilities are even better (subsidised bus is provided).
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
In general, I am quite happy with the teaching. It is informative, relevant to the real world problems, engaging and interactive. I don't like when some of my fellow students do not show their best manners during lectures.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
7
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Employability is a big thing in University of Greenwich, as the vast majority of courses have a strong vocational strand in them (nurses, midwives, teachers, engineers, business managers etc). We have a strong Employability Department providing regular training to students (e.g. CV writing workshops), organising career fairs, individual coaching. In addition, the University runs a point system to facilitate students entry into employment, which is called Employability Passport.
