OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall college experience so far.
I have had a great time at Myerscough College. I have come and done exactly what I wanted to do at a college that is friendly, welcoming, supportive and set in a great location. The tutors are enthusiastic about there subject, knowledgeable and well rehearsed. The small class sizes and smaller campus was brilliant for me. I got to know my class very well and many other students and staff. I felt part of a team here and welcomed on board so warmly. The assignments were both challenging and engaging. The practical field trips were great and this is seen as a key part of the learning journey. I had so much fun studying at Myerscough College and feel like I have come out with a great education, dear friends and a more rounded individual. I have gained in confidence and surpassed my expectations with the guidance of my tutors and peers.
Job Prospects
How does your college make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
There was several career days where representatives of the Environmental Sector came and discussed potential career roles and carried out mock interviews. Field trips included talks from professionals on how they received the position they are in and the skills required. Field trips was a great place to make links and professionals were always keen for student involvement. Active volunteering was promoted and the college has many links to involve students in volunteering. The link work is well established and the college is a great spring board into environmental organisations. Work skills held sessions on interview technique, CV development and communication skills to help students be able to stand out as a candidate.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I love being outside and much of the course is taught outside. The campus itself is beautiful with much green space and a working farm. This was a great resource for teaching and many assignments related to studying the flora/fauna of the college campus. The end of year 1 field trip was great. Every day out exploring different habitats of the north, a fen and ancient woodland etc. The course tutor is great, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the world of ecology. My favorite lectures were Wetland Management, 1st year, and Principals of Ecology in 2nd year. Enjoyed doing the assignments for these subjects and material taught was engaging and thoughtful. The balance between academic skills and practical out in the field was well judged with both having an important part in the course.
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The campus itself is not as large as a city center university, which suited me great and it is set in a rural surroundings. The student union works hard to have a wide awry of activities available throughout the day and every evening of the term, from D.I.Y. karaoke to dartboard. Several activities take place at University of Central Lancashire in Preston and transport is available. The Hub is a fun welcoming place to be and the staff there are friendly, always happy to help and are really always smiling.
Facilities
How good are your college's facilities?
The library is always evolving and books being updates. The head librarian is ace and will always go out of his way to help. There are many quiet study areas but also communal areas. Books can be requested and the library work with surrounding universities to get the books. Books can also be bought in especially. I am doing my PhD now and I had textbooks bought in especially for my work. The gym and sports hall is fully equipped and welcome to anyone, students receive discounted rates. The sports hall itself is a new building. The labs have everything one could need, but if not the staff will go to all lengths to provide you with the equipment needed and always up for a new experiment! The HE cafe is a warm friendly place with a fab buzz. The cafe here sells yum hot chocolate !
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
As mentioned earlier it is a rural college which fits its Land Based Courses. The nearest city is Preston and the college is an associate partner of University of Central Lancashire in Preston. There are regular student nights at Preston and students from Myerscough are invited to join in. Nightlife in Preston is buzzing with many places putting on nights especially for students. Preston has all the big chain shops and is has great transport links. A bus can easily take you from the center of Mysercough Campus into Preston center. At college itself there is a shop that sells all basic amenities, food, stationary, beauty products etc. There is a bar on campus 'The Stumble Inn' which has a ful licence and many a good student night takes place here!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Great. Much variety is offered. Students are encouraged to get involved and run the clubs they wish to run. It is a student led campus and that's the way the staff want it! All clubs and societies are free and you turn up. I recently did circuits which I loved and zumba dancing!
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the college? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
The Core, student support service, is central to the campus and the door is always happy. It is a bright colourful informal space where you can just drop in for a chat, use the phone, talk about anything confidentially if needed. There are no book in times or formalities which I really valued. Course tutor was down to earth and was available for any support needed. A few times I was a bit disappointed with my mark, he made time to go through these assignments and explain exactly what was good and what was a bit weak in the assignment. I came out knowing exactly where I needed to improve and understood my mark. This was very valuable and I wanted to improve. Credit was given where it was due.
