OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I honestly really enjoy university and am loving becoming more independent as a young person. I have learnt a variety of skills outside of my course, such as handling money, cooking etc. As far as socialising goes, I have met some amazing friends who I see often throughout the week and I'm really enjoying improving in a subject that I am passionate about.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
People on creative courses, like myself, are encouraged to pursue university managed work placements between their second and third year. This helps us gain job searching skills/contacts within the creative field, as well as, giving us the possibility to gain valuable knowledge from successful artists within industry.
My modules are to be completed by a specific deadline, much like creative deadlines will be set for me in my future career path. this promotes learning how to manage my time and learn new skills on the go.
There is also the student futures staff who are always willing to provide support with things such as: CV and cover letter writing, mock interviews, volunteering opportunities etc.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I love how easy going and approachable my tutors are, as they genuinely will do all that they can to help me. Despite being very talented they never talk to me condescendingly, and their constructive feedback is very useful to my learning.
Sometimes it is difficult to get all the feedback I would like, due to only having a limited contact time with tutors. however, I am able to contact them via email when not in lessons.
For people like me who came into the course with less knowledge of digital techniques than others. i would find it useful for extra sessions to be provided to teach the basics, alongside my uni modules. However, this is obviously time consuming for staff.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
9
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
My students union is very involved and always seems to have something new and exciting going on. There are a variety of events, from those that happen almost every week (quiz, bingo etc.) to more extravagant events, such as having foam parties, lazer tag events and so on.
I also think it's really good that they provide housing advice to students who are choosing where to live in the coming year.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
My university facilities for my course are great. They are constantly improving the computers and software we have access to. A main benefit of Teesside is that I have access to 3 labs containing Wacom Cintiqs. These undoubtedly help me to produce my best artwork.
Another major benefit is that most buildings are 24/7 access, allowing me to work at all times of the day and really strive to do my best.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Middlesbrough may not be a booming city like Newcastle, however it has it's own charms. The nightlife is surprisingly not that bad and costs less than other places. Also, there is a variety of restaurants and shopping centres that are only a walk away, reducing how much I need to spend on transport. this also applies for getting to university, which makes it much easier to attend all of my studies.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
I am not in fact a member of a society this year, as I have a great group of friends who I do stuff with and was also balancing studying with part-time work. However, there are a wide variety of societies/clubs that cater to people who are into sports, all the way to people who want to raise awareness of the importance of blood marrow donation. There really is at least one club/society that would interest everyone.
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Tutors are great at providing me with useful and fast feedback that I can apply to my work. They are also very understanding of things that happen outside of university that can impact upon my studies. They're very easy to talk to about any personal issues. This, alongside the university having a counselling and student health centre, helps me to feel like I have support when going through rough times.
