Immerse yourself in the literature and poetry of Wales while learning about the social, cultural and political history of the Welsh language in this diverse four-year degree programme. Our Welsh (second language pathway) degree programme offers you the opportunity to:
• Study a wide range of literature including plays, short stories, novels and poetry from the medieval bardic tradition to modern protest songs.
• Gain a solid foundation in oral and written Welsh language, grammar, linguistics and learn valuable translation skills.
• Be taught by some of the leading Welsh authors and scholars - staff in the Welsh Department include Prifeirdd (Chief Bards) and winners of the Welsh Book of the Year Competition.
• Year in Industry - undertake valuable work experience during your third year
• Study optional modules in Gender and Culture with specialist researchers and lecturers.
• Study optional modules in Creative Writing. This degree programme is eligible for Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Scholarships, as well as the University's general and Welsh-medium scholarships and bursaries. The Welsh department at Swansea is ranked 2nd in the UK Overall for Celtic Studies (Times Good University Guide 2024). Our Employability Officer supports our students with information and advice which is backed up by the University’s Careers Service and Work Placement Team. All students have access to events, workshops and employer talks, including an annual conference for students in June to support final year students with the transition into the world of work. Set in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the breathtaking Gower Peninsula, Swansea's multicultural campus community provides both a global perspective and a strong Welsh student community. You will be able to get involved in a wide range of clubs and societies including our active Welsh Society.
