Urban design involves shaping the physical setting for life in cities. This course provides a practical preparation for professionals entering urban design practice. It gives you an opportunity to study urban design at postgraduate level, without the need to commit to the full MA course. It also gives practitioners in the urban environment the necessary basic skills in urban design to enable government to deliver its vision of an ‘urban renaissance.
The course recognises that busy planners, landscape architects, architects, highway engineers and surveyors might not have the time or resources to commit to a part-time Master's course. Attendance has therefore been tailored to fit the demands of active professionals without compromising the courses educational objectives. On completion, many students opt to transfer credit and join the MA/Diploma course.
Careers:
Graduates of this course are usually built environment professionals who work with or oversee urban designers, for example in management positions, who need to understand the urban design profession and work requirements. These individuals will not usually be undertaking urban design directly, but working with urban design teams.
A minimum of a lower second class honours degree (2:2) in architecture, landscape architecture, town planning or another related discipline, together with practical or professional experience in their own field or in urban design. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio.
