What do students think?
Bailu Lu, Biomedical Science graduated 2009
The course is excellent – I want to do it all over again! I loved the sandwich year part of the programme. It forced me to leave my comfort zone and I gained invaluable experience, such as how to prepare for interviews, which helped me to secure a job when I graduated. Kent’s graduates have a great reputation in the workforce - I can’t thank the University enough.”
Ted Jenkins, Biochemistry 2009-2012
The lecturers are the best thing about the School; they make even the difficult topics enjoyable and if you have a problem, they are easy to contact and happy to help.
Biochemistry focuses on understanding the fundamental processes of life and how organisms function at the cellular and molecular level. Biomedical Science explores the biochemical processes that occur in the human body, and particularly human diseases like cancer and the response to infection. The Biology programme investigates, describes and analyses the structures and functions of living organisms and their interactions with the environment. All our programmes offer a Year in Industry designed to give students the chance to experience a research laboratory first-hand and the opportunity to gain new skills and expertise.
The School of Biosciences programmes place great emphasis on the future prospects of our graduates. Our programmes offer industrial placements, study abroad opportunities, and the development of transferable skills that are valued by employers. The strong practical focus within our courses give experience of cutting-edge technologies and research skills. In addition, academic advisors assist students with individual career advice and mentoring. Our graduates are employed in a number of roles, including academic or industrial research, the pharmaceutical sector, National Health Service, publishing and other professional roles.
The School provides state-of-the-art equipment for undergraduate and postgraduate practical training and extremely well-equipped research laboratories. Funds from the Government, industry and the Wellcome Trust, coupled with a recent £2 million upgrade, have brought the facilities to a level that are difficult to match elsewhere in the UK. The facilities form a core part of our research and also the practical training we provide for both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. We have three state-of-the-art and centrally managed research facilities providing an important resource for all research staff and students.
