Founded in 1992, we are a leading critical law school within the University of London.
Our internationally-recognised research guides our teaching, while strong links with the legal profession give our students real-world expertise and experience.
Department staff are recognised as experts in their fields, and play a prominent role in public affairs in the UK, Europe and internationally.
We draw on the values and methods of the social sciences and humanities, to shape our innovative approach to the study of law and criminology.
Choose from 17 different programmes offered by our two departments, and between full and part-time study.
Department of Criminology
The Department of Criminology at Birkbeck has a proud tradition of critical scholarship. We understand crime through research on power and inequality, are led by principles of social and racial justice, and focus on real-world social problems and criminal justice systems.
Our programmes are led by internationally recognised academics whose research challenges traditional criminal justice studies. Programmes combine innovative approaches with a solid grounding in key criminology topics, methods and theories, and employability. You can look forward to a stimulating learning environment, learning alongside students with diverse experiences.
Department of Law
Our Department of Law is a globally respected centre for world-class legal teaching, research and scholarship.
At the heart of our work is the pursuit of innovative legal research, and we interact with a wide range of groups ranging from policy-makers and public bodies to campaign groups and NGOs.
You will be taught by internationally-recognised authorities in their fields – active researchers who will support you to reach your potential.
