You might be hoping to develop or change your career, or just following a personal interest – let us enrich your knowledge and fuel your enthusiasm with our energy and passion for this area of science.
Our history and reach are hard to beat: we’ve been teaching geology degrees since 1840, and our students are based all around the globe.
We are a leading centre of innovative research and teaching, specialising in distance-learning, and part of the joint UCL-Birkbeck Institute of Earth and Planetary Sciences (IEPS). Ours is the only part-time geology degree course accredited by the Geological Society.
We’re also part of some ambitious space exploration programmes, including researching the possibility of life elsewhere in our solar system.
Fieldwork is an essential part of your learning, and so undergraduates typically spend 10 days each year on a residential field class at sites in the UK and abroad. We also offer many weekend and day trips around the UK.
Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences at Birkbeck were rated 6th in the UK in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), while we achieved 100% for an environment conducive to research of the highest quality.
Study in the evenings or from a distance
Birkbeck is London’s evening university: most of our classes take place between 6pm and 9pm. We are London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education.
Many of our UK-based students opt for a mix of face-to-face and distance learning.
We can offer you a flexibility that other universities can’t –an approach that means we attract a rich and diverse student population. There’s no such thing as a ‘typical’ Birkbeck student.
A degree from Birkbeck is also a qualification from the prestigious and internationally-renowned University of London. We will give you all the technical and practical skills you need, in a world-class scientific learning environment.
We offer courses at all levels, with the option to study through online/distance learning or at face-to-face lectures. We’re also flexible about our students’ backgrounds and we don’t insist on specific exam results – all we ask for is a genuine commitment to studying at university level.
With both full-time and part-time study available, you can learn in the way that suits you best.
