This course was previously offered by Writtle University College prior to the merger with ARU in March 2024. This course will run on the ARU Writtle campus.Studying for a degree with an integrated foundation year will offer you a supportive environment if you have been out of education for a few years or do not have the necessary UCAS points from your recent course of study. The foundation year (Year 0) will precede our standard 3-year degree course programmes and enables preparation for degree study. You'll study a range of modules that cover general academic skills, along with more subject-specific topics. This award is aimed at those individuals who wish to develop their interest in sport science with a robust grounding in scientific principles relevant to the coaching industry. Sport can be a complex environment, with athletes needing support to address the way in which the athlete is managed to maximise performance, when required, in a range of very diverse environments. This approach to sport science support may vary considerably with influencing factors such as gender, ability, age, location, health, and availability of professional services. The branches of support are many and varied, covering elements such as nutrition, health and disease, and the influence of other aspects such as behaviour and ethics. This course aims to provide the student with a thorough understanding of possible contributors to produce performance, from a micro- to macro-level – such understanding enabling the individual to contribute positively to athletic performance. Developing a thorough scientific understanding, combined with the ability to apply that knowledge practically, will enable the individual to take a proactive role in the industry following graduation. As a student at ARU Writtle, youll take part in practical, hands-on classes using specialist sports facilities and equipment. These include the Centre for Sport and Health, which is open to the public and where you may work with elite clubs and athletes, and members of the community. You'll be taught by staff who are experienced practitioners in elite sports such as football, cycling, GB Basketball, squash and athletics.
