Being a part of the master’s course in Special Educational Needs and Inclusion has been illuminating to say the least! From the lectures I have grown my knowledge and more than ready to move onto to work, or even take on a PhD. The lecturers are welcoming, knowledgeable (seriously I could listen to them talk about their research for days on end) and empathetic and by attending this course I not only leave with a greater understanding of my field, I leave with friends that I will stay in touch with once university is over.
Overview
The MA Special Needs and Inclusion will help you gain the necessary understanding, from a theoretical point of view, to become a more effective practitioner in the whole-of-life special needs sector. This course is designed to support rigorous and critical development by exploring the interfaces between theory, practice and policy for people with special needs by a number of social agencies (such as social care, health care, education and technological support) from before birth to death.
The MA Special Educational Needs and Inclusion is a distinct course designed to meet the growing need for professionals to have the skills and theoretical understanding necessary to work in different fields and across the life span.
The course provides a stepping stone to both professional leadership responsibilities and to doctoral study, such as our EdD or PhD programmes.
How you’ll be assessed
Each Module has its own assessment. These take on a wide range of formats, including poster presentations, oral presentations and portfolios; in addition to the more traditional essay.
You will write a dissertation (15,000 words or equivalent) as the final summative assessment for the MA.
Your future career
After the successful completion of the course, you may wish to continue onto a doctorate in this area.
Past students have gone into career areas such as SENCO/Inclusion Management, outdoor learning, health, social care, criminal justice, voluntary sector, and businesses providing specialist special educational needs services.
