This graduate-level diploma course builds your Spanish language skills. It is suitable if you who wish to teach Spanish, or if you already have a school qualification in Spanish (such as a Higher or A-level) and are looking to further your skills for work or personal interest. Using a combination of online tools, including web conferencing, and online immersion days, you will increase your skills in the Spanish language, including grammar and communication skills. You will also gain a wider knowledge of Spanish culture and society, as well as themes such as Spanish literature, history, education, environment, and cinema.
The course is organised into multiple modules of approximately ten weeks duration. The choice of assessments and the project allow you to focus on your own specific interest areas. There is no requirement for you to already have an undergraduate degree to study this course, as the modules you study and the credits you gain are not at Masters/Postgraduate level. For secondary teachers of a Modern Foreign Language (MFL), this course provides an additional teaching qualification in Spanish, as it is accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and carries a credit rating of 120 SCOTCAT points at SCQF levels 9-10.
Residence abroad is normally a pre-requisite for GTCS registration in Secondary Spanish. This period of residence has to be arranged by course participants themselves. This course is officially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education which collaborates with the delivery of the immersion days and also provides valuable materials.

Careers
Studying Spanish can improve your career prospects whatever industry you work in. It is also useful for those of you who simply want advanced language skills for personal interests. This course is popular with secondary school language teachers, who are looking to add an additional language to their teaching abilities. It is also useful for teachers in primary schools, further and adult education settings, who wish to teach the language.
Applicants will normally have a pass in Higher Spanish (or equivalent, such as the Dundee Intensive Spanish course by distance-learning). If you are a Secondary MFL teacher seeking an additional qualification in German, your undergraduate degree should normally be in another Modern Foreign Language, and you should hold a current Secondary MFL teaching qualification.
