Two of the most widely spoken languages in the world, Spanish and Portuguese are your gateway to a great many countries and cultures in Europe, Latin America and Africa.Studying a joint programme with us will provide you with intensive training in both the written and spoken aspects of each language, as well as introducing you to an extraordinary range of literature, film and theatre from around the globe. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world and Portuguese is the sixth. This programme is designed to perfect your linguistic skills and provide you with a deep cultural knowledge of the fascinating countries where these languages are spoken (in Spain, Portugal, Brazil, most of the nations in Latin America, Angola and Mozambique, and other West-African countries).Year 1- You will study either Spanish 1A or 1B depending on your language skills. You will also study a selection of literary texts and films. You will also study Portuguese 1, which caters for both beginners and more advanced students. You will be introduced to Portuguese-speaking literature through a selection of short stories from Mozambique, Angola, Brazil and Portugal. Year 2- You will continue to develop your spoken and written language skills and continue to study Spanish and Latin American culture. If you wish to study Catalan, you can start to learn about the language, history and culture of Catalonia. You will also continue to develop your spoken and written language with Portuguese Language 2, and you will study the cultures and the societies of the Portuguese-speaking world, through literature, film and the arts. Year 3- You will study or work in Spain or Latin America, and Portugal, Brazil or Lusophone Africa. Year 4- You will study advanced language courses and choose from a range of specialist courses on Spain, Latin America, Portugal, Brazil or Lusophone Africa, covering history, literature, film and culture. You will also complete your dissertation or long essay.
