COURSE OVERVIEW

Welcome to Swansea University's Schools Partnership (PYPA), a new way for school and university staff to work together to ensure that 'Tomorrow's Teachers' have the skills and experience they need to make a difference to pupils in Wales.

Qualified Maths teachers are in high demand across the UK. PYPA has developed an innovative PGCE Secondary Mathematics program that will give those entering the teaching profession the confidence to understand their subject better and their understanding of how to teach it. This program will prepare you to make a positive contribution to the learning communities you join. PYPA's PGCE Secondary Mathematics program is complemented by regional, national and international research. You will learn how to make Maths meaningful, interesting and fun and also how to analyze your own and your pupils' development.

PYPA's rigorous and integrated PGCE program will challenge you both academically and professionally. The PGCE Mathematics program aims to develop a critical understanding of the nature of Mathematics and its place in the school curriculum. You will be encouraged to research and test your own approaches to Mathematics pedagogy to identify those approaches that work best for you and the pupils you teach. PYPA is committed to developing research-led, reflective practitioners who can demonstrate creativity and flexibility in their teaching so that learners develop their subject qualification in an environment that is enjoyable.

Entry requirements

Applicants for the PGCE Secondary must complete the following before admission to the program: an honors degree with a minimum of 2: 2 in a relevant subject, or a related subject with at least 50% relevant subject content; GCSE B grade in English / Welsh (students applying for the Welsh program will need to have a GCSE in Welsh) GCSE B grade in Mathematics; the Grade B in English / Welsh and Mathematics at GCSE is a requirement set by the Welsh Government. However, we welcome applications from those with a Grade C in English / Welsh and / or Maths at GCSE. Candidates with a GCSE grade C in English / Welsh or Maths who meet all other entry criteria may be accepted on successful completion of the equivalence test. Due to the current situation with COVID-19, we are unable to follow our schedule for testing equivalence. Applicants will therefore be expected to sit their equivalence tests during the PGCE academic year where there are up to 3 attempts to pass. If the situation changes before the summer, we will resume our program of tutorials and tests before the start of the academic year.
