Prepare to successfully fulfil a senior leadership and contract management role in construction with an MSc in Quantity Surveying. You will be taught by research-active academics with extensive industry experience from the UK and around the globe.
This course is designed to give you the very core skills of understanding the causes of construction delays and what tools are necessary to resolve contemporary issues in contract management and to ensure projects are delivered on time, to the specified scope, with fewer legal disputes and above all within the original budget.
One of the biggest challenges the industry faces is the skill shortage, in medium and senior levels of well-trained Quantity Surveyors, Estimators, and Cost Engineers and Contracts Managers. Consequently, in the UK alone 1 in 3 (33%) of government-funded projects are delivered over budget, resulting in severe cost overruns. Globally, at least 4 in 5 (80%) of large and complex infrastructure projects take longer than planned and are extremely over budget by the time they are completed.
The course is also suitable for those wishing to pursue new career opportunities in managing contracts for complex projects. This will be through comprehensive knowledge of the procurement routes, tendering procedures for public and private client organisations, the technology of construction, assembly methods, and health and safety practices – all of which must be fully costed to mitigate delays and loses. Acquiring the knowledge to measure, estimate, prepare tender and contractual documents and procure will also be explored.
You will also develop an understanding of the tools that ensure project control of finances as core strategic skills of a highly competent and successful quantity surveyor as a cost engineer.
This course is subject to validation. You can still apply for this course while it is being approved.
An honours degree (2:2 or above) in a relevant built environment subject such as quantity surveying, building surveying, construction management, construction project management, architectural technology, or real estate management. Alternatively, applicants without an undergraduate degree but with subsequent work-related experience in construction management are encouraged to apply
