This course provides a broad ranging programme within the field of public health and community studies which includes learning outcomes that are consistent with the knowledge and selected competencies that are specified within the QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Health Studies 2016. These include:
- Key practical and transferable skills to enhance graduate’s long-term employability.
- Skills to develop a student’s capacity for independent learning, an enquiring and critical approach to both the theoretical and practical aspects of their subject, critical thinking, critical analysis and the application of knowledge in public health and community studies
- A range of placement experiences including group visits, insight visits and independent placements linked to career progression
A student successfully completing the HNC will experience the following in order to meet the course learning outcomes in section 13:
a) That they have undertaken the first part of the educational preparation for a career in public health or to work in communities with vulnerable individuals or groups.
b) Educational and practical preparation for effective interpersonal communication and team working.
c) An understanding of the complexity and evolving nature of communities and their impact upon Public Health.
d) An assessment of the emerging role of public health in contemporary society and the complex methods in which health and well-being is promoted and developed locally, nationally and internationally.
e) An appreciation of the importance of valuing diversity through inclusive, anti-discriminatory practice for effective work in communities.
f) An understanding of the benefits of partnership working at all levels and the barriers to achieving this collaboration.
g) That they have acquired the skills and knowledge as specified on the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework (2016).
h) An awareness of community initiatives through group visits and guest speakers.
How you'll learn
This course is available as a full-time three year or optional four-year sandwich course, the latter incorporating a work placement or study year in a related field. Alternatively, part-time study is also available. Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Therefore, the part-time teaching arrangements vary.
