Brain functioning underlies human and animal behaviour, and so is critical to our understanding of psychological phenomena. This module will outline the biological basis of human and non-human animal behaviour. This will be applied to psychological disorders. Complementary research perspectives, such as neuroscience, neuropsychology, evolutionary and comparative approaches will be discussed. In particular, this module will pay close attention to the ethical and historical aspects of Biological Psychology.
This module will provide introduction to cognitive psychology and basic cognitive processes. We will aim to provide students with some history and development of cognitive psychology, and associated research methodologies, in order to place the topic in the context of psychology more generally. In addition to this we will cover core areas of cognitive psychology in order to provide a solid grounding in the area and to prepare students for further advanced study at Level 2. Key topics that we will cover in this module are: attention and divided attention; short and long term memory systems as well as semantic memory and the representation of concepts; high level mental activities such as thinking, reasoning and problem solving; the impact of emotion on cognition, and its attendant difficulties as a research area and finally the notion of consciousness - what does it mean and how, if at all, can we study such a nebulous concept?
This module has been developed to help you to consider issues related to the interdisciplinary nature of degrees in the School of Education as well as how to study effectively and to develop good academic practice. You will learn how to present arguments and support your ideas. The sessions have also been developed to improve your performance in your academic work. In addition, they aim to develop your engagement with, confidence in and ownership of your degree programme.

This is evident in recent international research agendas into evidence based intervention and applications of neuroscience to education. The nexus between Psychology and Education represents an exciting and cutting edge field of study with diverse theoretical and methodological approaches. As research active academics who regularly collaborate across disciplines we are exceptionally well placed to deliver a research informed student experience.
The weekly lectures in statistics (90 minutes) will provide details of theory and practice and will demonstrate how basic statistical tests are calculated by hand and how this relates to the output from computer based statistical analysis packages. Alongside the lectures will be practical sessions that demonstrate experimental design and data visualisation. These sessions also present an opportunity for students to practise calculations of statistical tests using calculators and software. Postgraduate Teaching Assistants will play a key supporting role in delivering these sessions. Practical blocks will be progressive in terms of the data analysis required and the aim is to provide students with the necessary skills to analyse and comment on the results from each practical exercise. Research skills seminars will be held after each practical to act as support for the learning objectives of the practical. These will provide students with an opportunity to ask questions in smaller groups and help equip them with skills to use in report writing.
This module comprises three elements (lectures; practicals with seminars; computer-based learning classes) to aid learning of statistics and methodology relevant to psychologists.
The weekly lectures in (60 minutes) will provide details of theory and research from established 'classic psychology' paradigms. This will be disseminated through an intensive 10 week online lecture series (recoded in Mediasite and available under the Media tab in Minerva). An on line essay writing tutorial (delivered by Level 1 personal tutors via Microsoft Teams) will provide students with support and advice to prepare their first psychology essay.
This module explores ways in which learning can take place in formal and informal settings and the particular role of educators in the learning process. Two key themes are social inclusion and inclusive education. You will consider how particular groups of learners can become marginalised, categorised and stereotyped and the implications of this for schools and society as a whole. You will be given the opportunity to examine the relationship between special educational needs and disability and evaluate current strategies which aim to promote more inclusive practices. Delivery of the module will be in the form of lectures and supplementary sessions including seminars.
A historical and contemporary approach to understanding individual differences in human cognition, wellbeing and performance. The module will be taught by a team of experts in the subject. Students will continue to develop their knowledge of this discipline with particular emphasis on the research expertise of the module team.
This module will provide you with an introduction to the theory, policy and practice of managing children?s behaviour in classrooms. You will examine theoretical approaches, e.g., behaviourist and humanist psychology that underpin school policy. The influence of government policy on classroom practice will also be considered and you will reflect on your own personal school experiences. You will find out why some children present persistent poor behaviour in schools, e.g., as a consequence of medical condition and social and emotional problems. You will also consider practical strategies for managing children?s behaviour in a way that supports their learning and personal development.
The historical and epistemological background to memory research will be introduced, before moving on to explore how different types of information are held in memory, what processes operate during learning and remembering, and how failures of memory can often occur. Representations and processes underlying speech perception, reading, and speech production will be examined. In each case, classic and cutting edge theories and research methods will be critically considered, and links to neuropsychology highlighted. A key feature of the module will be an emphasis on how memory and language representations and processes may be interrelated.

In this module you will deepen your knowledge, develop your skills and gain experience from real-life education settings. You will work alongside teachers or other education professionals under the guidance of tutors from the School or Education. You will explore how education policy is implemented in practice. You will also examine how the management and leadership structures of educational institutions function and how management decisions are made and applied. You will consider social, political and ethical aspects or working in education and deepen your understanding of the relationship between pedagogic theory and practice. You will also extend your experience of workplace observation and of preparing/gathering resources and activities for education.
