In our BSc (Hons) Psychology with Child Development, you will use psychological science to understand typical and atypical development in children. Working with a team of developmental psychologists, you will build on a strong grounding in core areas of psychology to focus on processes of change in brain development, cognition, language, social skills, and mental health in childhood and beyond. This course offers a 75 hour placement module in the second year and the option of a placement year.The Bachelor of Science (Honours) Psychology with Child Development degree provides a strong academic foundation in psychology with a specialised focus on how psychology is applied to understanding the development of children and young people.In year one, students are introduced to core theories, concepts, and empirical studies in developmental, social, cognitive, biological, and differential psychology, alongside a firm grounding in empirical research methods. Year two offers students the opportunity to develop advanced research and critical analysis skills and apply these skills to core topics in psychology. At third year, students choose from a range of optional modules related to typical and atypical development in childhood and beyond and conduct an independent piece of original research under the supervision of a developmental psychologist.Throughout our Psychology with Child Development course, students participate in practical laboratory work, adhering to the BPS Code of Ethics. To develop the scientific competence which underpins the discipline and profession, students receive training in the research methods and data analytic techniques used by psychologists.Students work within a School equipped with excellent research facilities, including specialised laboratory suites, eye-tracking and virtual reality equipment, a psychometric test library, and an electroencephalogram (EEG) laboratory. The programme equips graduates with the scientific grounding and theoretical understanding required for advanced level studies.
