University of Brighton

The best experience about Brighton University so far would probably be the location. It has an incredible range of things to do for students. I would say the worst would probably be the student support. I came in as the second year from a different uni and I wasn’t given that much transitional help thus struggled to meet people and navigate my way.

the university buildings are near to eachother, the buildings themselves are great places to work with lots of facilities (silent study/quiet study/group work rooms/ cheap cafe/tuck shop/ fast wifi/ large library/ lots of desks and plugs for laptops/etc.). however i wish the uinion held a wider range of events (not just open mic nights/ "DJ"s ) and there arent many fun societies that everyone can attend

It is a very supportive environment and the lecturers are always willing to engage with you, help you, and listen to feedback. However, a lot of great teachers left or were fired during the strikes which was disheartening. The student union was not helpful in advocating for the feelings of the student body, of which the majority wanted the teachers' demands to be met. When your university is made great by the teaching staff, seeing them underpaid, disrespected, and laid off is upsetting. Aside from this, two improvements would be the personal academic tutor system and the extension system. I think it should be easier to acquire an extension at a university which prides itself on its pastoral care (which is usually excellent and the staff are ever flexible and understanding when it comes to accounting for the needs of their students), at other universities you are able to receive a set number of automatic extensions without proof needed for either 2 days or 5 days which I think would be very beneficial. Additionally, having a personal tutor is great, but only if you know who they are and you are fully aware of how to contact them, I get the sense that this system has fallen apart a bit since the lockdowns and needs to be reinstated fully, but I know plenty of students who do not know their personal tutors and are therefore likely missing out on opportunities for support.

Safe environment, Wasy access to the support team who are always available via email Extremely considerate for students with LSP (Learning Support Plan)

The best aspects of university life is its wide range of new lie experiences. Meeting people, gaining independence and navigating adulthood with new friends. Who will be with you for life and support you along this journey together. The worse aspect is managing money but even then there are so many helpful options to aid you in saving and keeping up with expenses.

Modern facilities in a central location. Constantly bustling with life. Accommodations could be improved by creating more of a community feeling and trying to get people together
