Overview
Our Prosthodontics MClinDent course offers you the opportunity for training in fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics with world-renowned academics and clinicians. You will receive personal supervision and, both academic and practical teaching in Prosthodontics and the skills needed to complete a research project in an area of prosthodontics. Sixty per cent of the course is dedicated to clinical experience. Teaching styles include close mentoring, chair-side guidance and small group works that emphasise the importance of the evidence based clinical techniques.
Course detail
Our course covers the scientific background to implants, fixed and removable prosthodontics and clinical techniques. You will study anatomy, physiology, histology and pathology of the dental and oral tissues, occlusion, epidemiology and prevention of dental caries and tooth wear, properties of dental materials, and radiology, infection control and audit in relation to prosthodontics. The course provides comprehensive exposure to planning care with experienced consultant led teaching for fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics. With clinical attendance every day and exposure to patients at least 60% of the week, your experience will typically include up to 40 crowns, 20+ conventional dentures and 20 implant supported restorations. By the end of the course, which is formally recognised as part of UK specialist training, you will be a highly knowledgeable professional in prosthodontics at master's level, and proficient and skilful in related areas of restorative dentistry. You will achieve clinical proficiency in prosthodontics to a recognised UK specialist level and have the opportunity to sit for the membership examination with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. UK/EU practising dentists usually attend three days per week over four years. Practising dentists from overseas who have to relocate to take the course will generally attend five days per week over three years. The course content is identical across both versions. Teaching styles include close mentoring, chairside guidance and small group work that emphasises the importance of the evidence base for prosthodontics in the literature and creates new research opportunities. A research project is also undertaken.
Teaching and assessment
We will use a delivery method that will ensure students have a rich, exciting experience from the start. Face to face teaching will be complemented and supported with innovative technology so that students also experience elements of digital learning and assessment. Your three taught academic modules will be assessed by written examination. Your five clinical modules will be assessed on clinical work, with oral and clinical examinations. Your research module will be assessed by a dissertation and oral examination.
Students should have a dental qualification plus at least two years post-qualification experience. For UK applicants FDS, MFDS or MJDF is desirable. Non UK applicants will be required to provide evidence of English language proficiency.
