This degree apprenticeship has been specifically designed to enable the apprentice to develop the knowledge, skills, professional behaviours and values required by the nationally approved MSc Apprenticeship Standard in Risk and Safety.

As a degree apprentice, they are an employee earning a wage (at least the Apprenticeship Minimum Wage) usually working at least 30 hours per week. They are also a full-time student at Middlesex University with the same access and entitlements to services and support as they undertake their degree.

Once they successfully complete their degree apprenticeship, they will have met the Apprenticeship Standard and be recognised as being fully competent to carry out the role of a risk and safety professional. This programme also includes the opportunity to gain professional status as all apprenticeships in England are required to include professional recognition where available.

The apprentice will have the opportunity to gain professional status and upon successful completion of their masters apprenticeship they will have gained:

  • A Middlesex University degree in:
  • MSc Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental
    or
  • MSc Occupational Safety, Health and Well-being Management
  • An Apprenticeship Certificate demonstrating that they have met the national Apprenticeship Standard for full occupational competence as risk and safety professional
  • Professional recognition/status: Graduate member of IOSH

This degree apprenticeship produces graduates with a wide range of professional, graduate and transferable skills. Within the programme the apprentice is able to direct their learning to all aspects of professional practice so that on completion of the award they are able to offer employers broad knowledge and skills applied to practice. The award has been matched to the needs of a variety of stakeholders and in particular in relation to the strategic management and operational practice of the high reliability organisational sector.

The apprentice could then progress into a range of careers such as:

  • Safety and Health Officer/Practitioner in Local Authorities
  • Safety and Health Environmental Health Professional in the Private Sector e.g. travel companies, hotel chains, supermarkets, caterers or Safety and Health consultancy/auditors
  • Working for government agencies such as Health and Safety Executive
  • Working within non-governmental organisations
