Our PGCE Modern Languages (QTS) programme is designed to challenge you to make informed and justified decisions about your teaching approach, laying the foundation for ongoing professional development. Upon successful completion of the course, you will also have the opportunity to return for part-time study and complete a Master’s in Teaching Studies with us. Benefit from the experience of our specialist Modern Languages Tutor who will introduce you to recent and engaging approaches to teaching Work closely with other modern language students as part of a supportive community of learners Join a thriving network of alumni who can support you as you embark on your teaching career
You are required to have a strong academic record at A level or equivalent in relevant subjects, along with a strong degree—usually a minimum of a 2:2—that is relevant to the subject you intend to teach. Your degree should include at least 50% French, German, or Spanish. If you are a native speaker of French, German, or Spanish, you may apply, but you must also hold a relevant degree qualification. The ability to offer an additional language (French, German, or Spanish) is preferable. Your academic suitability will be assessed based on the relevance of your degree, other qualifications, and experience related to your chosen teaching subject. You must also have GCSE Mathematics and English at Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent qualifications; if not already achieved, this will be a condition of any offer, and only equivalency tests from Equivalency Testing will be accepted. Additionally, you must complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before taking up a place, complete relevant checks to confirm your health and physical capacity to teach, and agree to abide by the University of Birmingham Code of Professional Conduct and Fitness to Practise.
