Course overview Empower your teaching journey with our specialist programme. Gain exceptional training and support to inspire young minds in the 3-11 age range, through close partnerships with schools. Our PGCE Primary with Mathematics Specialism (QTS) programme ensures your professional growth, empowering you to make informed teaching decisions. Complete the course to pursue a part-time Masters in Teaching Studies. Once you have enrolled on the PGCE primary course, you can opt to specialise either in working with 3-7 year olds or 5-11 year olds or 7-11 year olds. Students on the 3-7 specialism will undertake two placements, one in in the Early Years Foundation Stage and one in Key Stage 1. Students on the 5-11 specialism will undertake two placements, one in Key Stage 1 and one in Key Stage 2. Students on the 7-11 specialism will undertake two placements, one in Lower Key Stage 2 and one in Upper Key Stage 2. Course highlights We excel in teacher education by combining theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the PGCE Primary with Mathematics Specialism programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This programme offers 80 credits towards further study, allowing graduates to pursue a Master's degree such as the MA in Teaching Studies. The integration of academic rigour and hands-on practice, along with the opportunity for advanced qualifications, makes us a leader in teacher education.
To apply for the PGCE Primary with Mathematics Specialism (QTS), you must hold a degree from a UK Higher Education Institution, normally with a classification of 2:2 or above—this will be a condition of any offer if your degree has not yet been awarded. You must also have GCSE Mathematics at Grade 7/A or above, and English and Science at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent qualifications); if not already achieved, these will be a condition of your offer, and equivalency tests will be accepted only from approved equivalency testing providers. In addition, you will need to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before taking up your place, undergo the necessary health and physical capacity checks to ensure you are fit to teach, and agree to abide by the University of Birmingham Code of Professional Conduct and Fitness to Practise.
