University of Glasgow

The study spaces and buildings, the vast student support, the number of clubs and societies and unions. The quality of the education and research and knowledge from the lecturers as teaching assistants. Plentiful modes of public transport nearby (subway, trains, bus). Although not a lot of parking near the uni for students, and some of the outlets at the uni are quite expensive- given it’s a uni and filled with students, if a home students has a lot of extra curricular such as societies, or school events are from 5pm onwards which depending on your commute is not practical so can feel a bit isolated from that perspective. Lots of resources for help with different topics from mental health, general advice, help with studies etc. the student kitchens means students can bring their own food and heat it up. Some buildings can be difficult to find or specifically the rooms within it, but staff are approachable and helpful and the UofG life app offers a ‘find a room’ feature which is very helpful. Many buildings are accessible, although some of the older buildings are not as much, but a lot of them are. Overall, would highly recommend the University of Glasgow.

The campus is super pretty which I love though some of the amenities are a little aged, particularly the 1970s buildings which most don’t seem to have been touched since they were built. over than that it is great

Glasgow is an amazing city, with plenty of people to meet and things to do outside of university. Within Glasgow uni, there many amazing societies, to the point where every night there will be some society doing something.

- really slow administration sometimes, and washroom facilities could be better. sometimes heater also doesn't work - really great variety of student societies!! something for everyone.

The University of Glasgow has a bubbly student population and contains not one but two lovely student unions. Each of these hold weekly events that mean anyone can get involved. I particularly like the quizzes held by each union (Mondays for GUU and Wednesdays for QMU). Asides from events the unions put on there are club nights on every day of the week in Glasgow and from Thursday-Saturday you are genuinely spoilt for choice. Glasgow is definitely one of the best cities in the UK for student night life and has been rated such before by the tab but speaking from personal experience I definitely agree. If clubs aren’t your thing then Glasgow also is home to many restaurants both fine dining and casual bites including many on the streets just opposite the university campus. The main campus itself is right in the centre of Glasgow’s west end, probably its nicest area. It has lots of lovely shops, cafes, bars and a subway station to take you across the whole city in just 15 minutes. It really is bang in the centre. Most student accommodations are in walking distance with its biggest (and best) being Murano which is only 20-25 mins walk away. Glasgow has a large range of societies to join and many of them have nothing to do with alcohol if that’s not your thing. Baking, doctor who, knitting, soup soc are just a few to mention. Asides from this there are also around 50+ sports societies that have their own community of GUSA (Glasgow University Sports Association). Joining a sports team is a very good idea at Glasgow because not only does this give you a way to meet new people but it gets you active each week and access to the gym and all it’s facilities, it even has a pool and sauna. Glasgow contains a library which has 12 floors meaning that 90% of the time they’ll be a seat available (don’t talk to me about exam season though). It also has the James McCune Smith building which is 7 floors and hosts multiple large lecture halls and many study spaces plus multiple dining areas that have microwaves and hot water taps if you want to bring food from home. These are the two main study spaces but across the campus most buildings will contain small libraries if you go looking. I personally enjoy the fact that Glasgow University has multiple of its own newspapers. Giving students the chance to voice their own opinions and write about what they know other students want to read is very refreshing. We have the Glasgow Guardian which reads somewhat similarly to the actual Guardian - actual news stories, investigative journalism, and opinion pieces. Then we have the Glasgow Tab who write on pop culture and events happening around the university. We also have the GUM which creates a magazine that has a theme each issue and is usually focused on art, poetry, photography, opinion pieces etc. They are all very interesting reads and I pick up a copy of each every time they are issued (bonus is that they are all always free!). Something to be improved would probably be the lecture recording equipment of a lot of the rooms as if you are unable to make a lecture you rely heavily on the recording as sometimes the slides of certain lecturers may be very sparse/just images yet in my experience the equipment often does not work which means you miss out on valuable information/ information you may need for exams. Another issue is how expensive food is on campus. Snacks from the library and the JMS are pretty much double what they would be from a corner shop and it forces students who are under time crunches or who don’t know the area well enough to fork out quite a lot for things that shouldn’t be so expensive. There are a wide selection of places to get food on campus and both unions have their own kitchens/cafes which I find to be the best value for money. All in all I truly enjoy attending this university. I love the place itself, i love the buildings, i enjoy my course and especially how studenty the west end feels.
