The MPhys teaches physics in greater depth than the BSc Honours degree. It’s for those of you who want to pursue a professional career in physics, with classes designed to meet the needs of the professional physicist. In the final years of this course students encounter modules that are necessary to produce a graduate physicist capable of working in a research environment in either industry or academia. In year 3, in addition to the core physics modules, students can choose from a set of advanced modules in mathematical physics, computational physics, experimental physics, or communicating physics. In Year 4 students can choose optional modules from a range of diverse topics, such as theoretical physics, plasma physics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics or photonics and then extend the depth of coverage of these subjects through Year 5. There is a strong emphasis on laboratory work, which will help you develop a sound understanding of experimental physics and instrumentation. You’ll complete your laboratory work training with a research project carried out in an up-to-date research lab, attached to one of the department’s research groups. This allows you to benefit from our lively and diverse research environment. Within the MPhys degree structure, the students have the opportunity to tailor their modules in the final two years, to a given specialisation in a particular subject area. This is done by selecting modules relating to an area of expertise, offered by the department and pursuing a project in that area, over the 4th and 5th years of study.
