From learning core physics principles to solving problems such as 'How likely is an asteroid to hit the Earth?', Physics at Keele explores dynamic topics across the full breadth of the subject to quench your curiosity about the physical world. With core professional, practical and employability skills embedded throughout the curriculum and opportunities to apply your learning to real-world physics challenges, you will graduate with a toolkit of skills to pursue a career across a wide-range of sectors.

Course overview

Physics is a fundamental, curiosity-driven subject with a huge variety of applications, playing a pivotal role across many areas of science and industry. From powering our world to advancing medicine and technology, physics is at the heart of innovation.

Our Physics programme at Keele is designed to provide you with a solid foundation in core physics concepts, graduate skills and attributes defined by the Institute of Physics (IoP) accreditation framework. You will have opportunities for individual advanced project work, collaborative learning, work and educational placements, and to explore frontier topics guided by our world-leading researchers - from real-world applications to ''blue-skies'' astrophysics.

Work placements

In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. In between year two and three of your studies, you can spend time gaining practical experience with a physics-focused company or organisation. This will enable you to apply the skills and theories you have learnt to real situations in the industrial workplace.

You will also enhance your employability skills in the presentation and communication of data, the writing of reports, and the ability to work independently, and as part of a team. Work experience in your area of interest will not only demonstrate your commitment and passion, but will also enable you to make meaningful connections by networking with experts in the field.

Your future career

95% of Keele students are in employment or further study within 15 months of finishing their studies (HESA Graduate Outcomes, 2019/20)

Our Physics BSc will equip you with a diverse range of transferable skills including advanced problem-solving, programming, communication and teamworking skills. You will be equally qualified and prepared for postgraduate studies or for graduate level employment in a wide variety of industrial sectors. To help you discover and gain knowledge about the diverse career opportunities within the field, we have a dedicated physics careers tutor based in the school.
