You will research a specific area of speech, language and communication science. Working with your supervisor in our specialist research centre work will involve one or more aspects of this discipline. Your degree will involve primary research. Enabling you to make a unique and original contribution to the body of evidence that underpins language and communication science. Working closely with your supervisor you will benefit from academic expertise, spanning all aspects of speech, language and communication disorders. We also have knowledge and expertise in typical speech and language, social and clinical linguistics, deafness, dysphagia, and developmental disorders. You will study in the Centre for Language and Communication Science Research. We have an on-site speech and language therapy clinic, and collaborations with academic and clinical partners in the UK and internationally. The Full-time duration is 2 – 4 years Part time: 3 – 7 years and PhD by prior publication: 1 – 2 years.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements vary by subject area. You should approach academic staff working in your area of interest to discuss your proposal ahead of submitting an application. You would usually be expected to hold an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution. Where the applicants academic profile shows no evidence of training in research methods. It will normally be recommended that you first complete an MSc or MRes programme to prepare you for MPhil/PhD studies. Substantial employment or research experience may be considered for some subject areas alongside or in place of academic qualifications. For the Clinical MRes programme, applicants are required to be registered with a clinical professional group such as Nursing, an Allied Health profession or Medicine.
