The MRC Epidemiology Unit is a research department in the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge and investigates the causes and prevention of obesity and diabetes. The department also hosts the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR) which studies the population-level determinants of dietary and physical activity behaviours, develops and evaluates public health interventions and is helping to shape public health practice and policy.
Our PhD students have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research under the supervision of senior scientists supported by postdoctoral researchers and a large team of fieldworkers, data managers, statisticians, study coordinators, technical and administrative staff.
Students become members of one of the University’s Colleges and are trained at the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
Assessment
Thesis
The PhD is examined by thesis (maximum of 60,000 words) and viva.
Other
All PhD students are required to undergo formal assessment (by written report and viva) at the end of their first year. If successful, the student moves from being "probationary" to being registered for the PhD and can proceed with their project.
Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK 2.1 Honours Degree. The MRC PhD positions follow a three-year PhD programme for those students who already have a master's degree or equivalent training in an appropriate scientific discipline. Opportunities also exist for four-year positions for those wishing to undertake the MPhil in Epidemiology/Public Health course in the first year of their PhD. The academic requirement for entry is a first or upper second-class degree or equivalent. Note that applicants who apply to take the MPhil course as a precursor to the PhD must pass the MPhil and make a separate application to continue to the PhD (ie continuation is not automatic).
