Characterised by first-class training, internationality, dedicated mentoring and early independence in research, it is among the world's most competitive PhD training schemes. All of EMBL's six outstations participate in the programme.

EMBL-EBI provides a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment in which research and service provision are closely allied. We are a world leader in bioinformatics research and service provision, as we are at the centre of global efforts to collect and disseminate biological data. We share a campus with the Wellcome Sanger Institute, 12 miles south of Cambridge in the United Kingdom

Assessment
Thesis

PhD thesis assessment is in accordance with University rules. Candidates should write as concisely as is possible, with clear and adequate exposition, and with the Degree Committee's prescribed limits of length and stylistic requirements.

Current word limit

The thesis is not to exceed 60,000 words (80,000 by special permission) exclusive of tables, footnotes, bibliography and appendices. Double-spaced or one-and-a-half spaced.

Viva

  • The oral examination will ordinarily take place in Cambridge
  • It is carried out between yourself and the two examiners
  • There is no set duration, but expect it to last between 90 minutes and three hours.
