We run a comprehensive graduate programme to ensure that our students are able to gain a wide range of experience. At the end of their studentship, Babraham students have been trained in a variety of state-of-the-art techniques at the frontiers of modern molecular biology. They also receive training in a wide range of transferable skills, including intellectual property and exploitation of knowledge for wealth creation and improvement to the quality of life. They also know how to organise their laboratory and research programme.AssessmentThesisThe thesis should not exceed 60,000 words (80,000 by special permission) excluding bibliography, figures, appendices etc. The thesis should be double-spaced or one-and-a-half spaced. Single- or double-sided printing is allowed. All students have to defend their thesis by attending a viva voce examination conducted by two examiners. Although the thesis must be the work of the student, the supervisor is allowed to give suggestions, critical advice and feedback on content and any draft version(s) of the thesis.OtherStudent progress is assessed formally by the writing of a number of Reports, after 2, 8, and 18 months. Students also write a thesis plan after 24 or 36 months. Each Report is assessed by their Personal Committee who report on the student's progress to the Babraham Graduate Committee. Student progress is also assessed by a presentation of their results at various seminars and by the filling in of termly Self-Assessment forms.
Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK Good II.i Honours Degree.
