Colleges play a vital role in preparing both the current and future workforce to respond effectively to the evolving needs of industry and the national economy. In 2022/23, Scotland’s colleges provided education to 248,907 students across 329,920 courses (Audit Scotland, 2024). At the heart of the college system are Further Education (FE) lecturers. Our PGCert in Tertiary Education is for lecturers and teaching staff currently working in further education colleges or similar learning environments. The course enables you build on your existing experience while gaining a professionally recognised teaching qualification in Further Education (TQFE). The course is currently open only to applicants domiciled in the UK. Enhance your education skills Our tertiary education qualification helps you to gain greater responsibility and leadership in your own work environment. You’ll: develop your understanding of social and cultural diversity, issues relating to equality and equity, and the concept of inclusive practice explore models of learning theories and their implications for teaching practice plan, implement and evaluate a small-scale teaching innovation collaborate with colleagues as a means of exploring different teaching and assessment practices examine your broad professional practices in a critical reflective manner. Study a professionally accredited qualification Our PGCert Tertiary Education with Teaching Qualification (Further Education) is accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). This means it’s a recognised teaching qualification. The course is also based on the Professional Standards for Lecturers in Scotland’s Colleges (2018). Benefit from expert teaching staff and a network of partner colleges Learn from expert teaching staff who have extensive links across a network of partner colleges within the FE sector in Scotland. You’re supported to engage with your peers across this network to enhance your own and your colleagues’ professional development. You also have access to experienced and qualified staff in partner colleges. We work with our partner colleges and the GTCS to continually evolve the course based on industry needs.
A minimum of a second class Honours degree (2:1 preferred) in a relevant subject or equivalent is required.
