All about the course

The course comprises a single 60-credit module, 'Supervision in Counselling, Psychotherapy, and Helping Relationships,' studied over two ten-week semesters.

Module Details:

  • Duration: Two semesters
  • Content: Based on the seven-eyed supervision model by Hawkins and Shohet.
  • Participants: Open to counsellors, psychotherapists, and other helping professionals with at least one year of post-qualification supervised practice.

Teaching Methods:

  • Lectures and Skills Practice: Includes experiential exercises and lectures.
  • External Practice: Requires twenty hours of external supervisory practice.
  • Assessment: Includes a methodology and philosophy of supervision essay, a live skills assessment, and a final thirty-minute transcribed recording with a process commentary and practice evaluation.

What will I be doing?

Teaching:

  • Format: Distance learning with weekly three-hour sessions for ten weeks in each semester.
  • Content: Small group skills practice, reflective sessions, practice-related lectures, and occasional experiential workshops.
  • Additional Sessions: May be required for assessment at the end of the course.

Assessment:

  • Formative Assessments: Peer and tutor reviews, feedback on written work.
  • Summative Assessments:
    • Written essay on supervision theory and practice
    • Portfolio reflecting on supervision practice
    • Supervision skills assessment

Entry requirements

All applications must meet the following criteria for the application to be considered: Evidence of Professional qualification in a helping profession; Evidence of membership of a relevant professional body for at least one year; Evidence of at least one year of post-qualification practice; Evidence of a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling or other professional person-centred skills equivalent; Normally evidence of a 2.2. degree or equivalent. We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.
