Overview of the programme

The Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is ideal for newly-appointed lecturers in higher education and researchers with teaching responsibilities.

The aim of the programme is to develop participants approaches to effective teaching, learning, assessment and evaluation practices in a higher education context. In addition, the programme supports the development of the scholarship of learning and teaching.

The programme of study focuses on the delivery of level 4 and above programmes on the Qualifications and Credits Framework (QCF) and the wider context of supporting learning and teaching in higher education.

The programme is aligned to Descriptor 2 of the UK Professional Standards Framework (Advance HE), and on successful completion of the programme, participants can claim professional recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

KEY COURSE FEATURES

  • The programme is pivotal in supporting and encouraging newly appointed staff and existing staff in both their academic practices of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation and in the development of their research and publication profiles.
  • Consolidates personal development and evidence of professional practice in your higher education career.
  • The programme enables HE lecturers and others with substantial teaching roles to gain professional recognition with Advance HE and the Higher Education Academy (HEA) through the alignment of their practice with the UK Professional Standards Framework.

ASSESSMENT & TEACHING

Assessment is 100% coursework. Students on the course must be employed within the HE sector and have a substantive teaching role.

Assessments include

  • A microteach to peers
  • An observation of the participants practice in HE
  • A reflective essay that critically evaluates the participants learning, teaching and assessment practice
  • A critical study into an applied area of academic practice designed to enhance the participants practice and support student learning.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Completion of the full award (PG CERT Learning and Teaching in Higher Education) will enable participants to gain professional recognition as Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) at Descriptor 2 of the UKPSF, which is the sector standard required of teachers in higher education.
