COURSE OVERVIEW

You will gain a thorough grounding in the practical skills needed to be an effective counsellor. Encouraged to become a self-reflective practitioner, you will explore your feelings, attitudes and personal relational issues in order to evaluate and further refine your abilities.

You will enhance your understanding of social and cultural differences and values while analysing ethical dilemmas found in the profession. This will give you the ability to work effectively and sensitively with clients from a variety of backgrounds.

Even if you have limited experience in interpersonal and counselling practice, this course will provide you with the fundamentals needed to enter this rewarding field.

You'll develop skills that will help you analyse dilemmas and work effectively and sensitively with ethical issues such as social and cultural differences including diverse values, beliefs and attitudes of clients.

TEACHING & LEARNING

Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Applicants should normally have at least a second class honours degree and have completed a face to face short course in Counselling Skills (at least 12 hours study). All suitable candidates will be invited to attend an applicant session after being made an offer.
