Earn the academic qualifications, pedagogical knowledge and practical experience you need to become an excellent teacher able to teach a rich and diverse curriculum. The key aim of the programme is to deliver a high quality, current and relevant course of training, leading to outstanding outcomes.

How you learn

All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.

This course is vocational in its nature – designed to produce highly proficient RE teachers, passionate and fully prepared for full-time employment. You'll undertake 120 days of placement work across two school settings, providing vital experience of the realities of teaching, supported by a subject mentor in your school and a personal development tutor at the University. Underpinned, by extensive training through on-campus learning, activities and independent academic work.

This course prepares you for a career in in assorted educational settings, including

  • specialist teachers and educators of secondary religious education in a variety of educational contexts
  • Continuation of academic careers as researcher via Masters level study and PhD
  • non-government organisation (NGO) educationalist roles
  • Varied enrichment and extra-curricular work with young people

Graduates of the programme are highly employable and sought after by schools and colleges, our graduate employment rate is usually well in excess of 90%. Graduates also have great career prospects, with many becoming Head of Department, and often acting as mentors to new student teachers.

Entry requirements

An honours degree (normally 2.2 or above) or equivalent which includes substantial elements of theology, religious studies or philosophy. Normally GCSE grade C or Grade 4 in English Language and mathematics, or equivalent. Where applicants have achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above in English literature only, we will look for further evidence of a breadth of achievement in English. We will consider applicants who are in the process of obtaining the relevant GCSEs.
