Begin a rewarding and fulfilling career in teaching with a PGCE in Secondary Modern Languages from London Met. This course covers the principles of Modern Language teaching, producing an effective classroom environment and how to work in the field of education.
Centred around the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child, this degree has a rigorous academic programme. There is a human element to the course which encourages individuality and communication. In the past, trainees have achieved 100% good to outstanding at the end of their placements and there is a very high employment rate. Department for Education bursaries are available for this course.

This course will train you to teach 11 to 16-year-olds (Key Stages 3 and 4) and, by arrangement, 16 to 18-year-olds in a secondary school environment. This PGCE leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The modern languages included are French, Spanish and German, and you will be developing pupils’ skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing the language they choose to learn.
At the University, you’ll study teaching methodology, pupil assessment and how children learn. There will also be collaborative and school-based projects with other trainees.
Based in London, this PGCE course will broaden your understanding of teaching in multicultural urban environments. Through your two school placements, you’ll learn how to help 11-16-year-olds develop their foreign languages effectively and fluently.
Assessment
Your assessment will consist of four elements:
School placement A
School placement B, where your teaching ability will be assessed in relation to the standard for Qualified Teacher Status
a Professional Practice Portfolio which is compiled throughout the year, detailing personal experiences and reflections on your development as a teacher, largely in relation to your practical teaching experience
the Educational Research Assignment which allows you to explore an educational issue
There are no examinations.
You'll share feedback with your peers and colleagues on the placement, completing weekly reflections and contributing to online discussions in order to further develop your understanding of the secondary teacher role.

University Standard Entry Requirement - Three passes at GCSE level or equivalent at Grade C or above including English Language and where required Maths, and two or three GCE A level or vocational A level passes; five passes in the Scottish Certificate of Education, of which two are at higher grade or passes in four subjects all of which are at higher grade; a pass in an access course recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and designed to prepare students for higher education; a pass in a Foundation course in art and design validated by Edexcel; the award of the Diploma of the International Baccalaureate - minimum 28 points; a pass of 70% in the European Baccalaureate; the Irish Leaving Certificate with passes at grade C or above in five subjects; the award of an Edexcel National Diploma or Certificate; the successful completion of the 14-19 Diploma with 80 or more UCAS points. You will be required to have: UK degree grade 2.2 in the language you want to teach or equivalent. If you do not have a degree in that language but hold an alternative degree at the required level, then you should be a native speaker. You should also ideally have spent a significant amount of time in a country where the foreign language you intend to teach is spoken; literacy and numeracy tests — these are university-based tests, which you will be asked to undertake at your interview; a valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and Confirmation of Fitness to Teach (eg a London Metropolitan University Health Check) which you will be advised to apply for after an offer is made. GCSE English and Mathematics grade C (grade 4) or above (or equivalent, see Equivalency Testing or A Star Teachers). Before you can be permitted to enrol to this course: you must not already hold QTS or be qualified to teach in another EU/EEA country.
