Join a Primary PGCE programme at the University of Southampton to equip yourself with the very latest education research and practice. Education at the University of Southampton is ranked 5th in the UK (The Complete University Guide, 2026) Each programme will provide you with extensive, supervised school or college experience during your study. You’ll engage with research-led approaches to enhance the quality of teaching you can offer your students and begin your career with confidence. You'll develop into a confident teacher who can improve the progress and outcomes of the children you teach. Our PGCE Primary courses also allow you to gain credits towards a master’s degree. This will strengthen your career prospects and progression even further. You’ll join a close-knit and diverse learning community, we offer an exceptional academic experience, with small-group teaching that allows you to explore topics in depth and plenty of support to ensure you achieve your potential. Talk to us for support through the consideration and application process.
Youll need a 2:2 degree (UK honours degree or equivalent) or above, GCSEs (minimum grade 4/C) in English language, maths and science, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken English, and basic numeracy and ICT skills; if you don't have the required GCSEs, we'll ask you at the offer stage to take equivalency tests at your own expense. You dont need classroom experience before starting the course, but we recommend arranging time in a school to improve your understanding of the role of a classroom teacher. To follow the Maths specialism route, youll need GCSE Maths at grade 6/B (or equivalent) as a minimum, and an A or AS level (or equivalent) would be desirable; well also consider mathematical elements of your degree or significant work experience involving mathematics. Other areas of relevant experience may also support your application, for example, coaching, playgroups, or voluntary work overseas. As part of the application process, youll have a formal interview, give a short presentation, and carry out a written task.
