The Brunel PGCE in Secondary Education (Science with Physics) aims to facilitate your transformation into a well-educated, confident and motivated science educator, helping all pupils become scientifically literate citizens. As a secondary school physics teacher you will have to build upon and sustain pupils interest for the subject as they journey through the physics National Curriculum. You will initiate and develop their understanding of how complex and diverse phenomena of the natural world can be described, in terms of a number of key ideas which can be applied universally. You will also need a secure understanding of the content which would lie outside your specialism, as it is highly likely you will be teaching chemistry and biology topics at least up to KS3. Our course will help you develop this. As it is planned around the ‘big ideas in science, around which there will be lectures, discussions and opportunities to practise using your knowledge to teach. The need for qualified, enthusiastic teachers with an understanding of the demands society places on young people has never been greater. The opportunity to educate children and young people, and learn from them in return, is immensely rewarding.Careers and your futureA Brunel PGCE with recommendation for QTS is a recognised symbol of high quality Initial Teacher Education (ITE). This is demonstrated by Brunels outstanding employment rates over time and feedback from Brunel alumni student teachers, our partnership schools and Ofsted inspectors.Brunel PGCE graduates have gone on to work in our Partnership schools, and many in schools where they undertook a placement experience. This allows the department to retain links with former students and often they become school-based mentors for Brunel PGCE students. The department also has a network of alumni in positions of responsibility in schools across the country.
