Discover our PGCE General Primary course with a specialism in SEND and enable all children to be successful from the very start of their school life. This course prepares you to be an outstanding primary school teacher with additional skills that will allow you to become confident in creating an inclusive classroom. In addition, following this specialism can also be a step towards a career as a SENCo or a specialist SEND teacher.
COURSE OVERVIEW
This specialism allows you to explore ways in which all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, can be included in classrooms and schools. You will learn through a combination of theory, an examination of current policy and practice, including the Children and Families Act (2014) and the SEND Code of Practice 0 to 25 (2015), combined with plenty of practical experience and input from experts in the SEND field. And, because our course has QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) built-in, you can apply for a position as a primary school teacher the minute you graduate.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
The programme will focus on Inclusion/SEND; you will explore ways in which all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, can be included in classrooms and schools. You will examine the concepts and ideas that underpin the Inclusion agenda within the political context of education in the UK. In particular, you will focus on the causes of marginalisation, and the reasons why a substantial number of pupils fail to achieve consistently or well within that system.
The main focus will be on SEND, through an examination of current policy and practice, including the Children and Families Act( 2014) and the SEND Code of Practice 0 to 25 (2015), the graduated response in schools, and multi-agency collaboration. You will consider the implications of the four areas of need identified in the Code of Practice, and how these influence and determine appropriate responses within classroom practice.
Normally a first degree, or equivalent with a minimum of 2:2 honours. Three GCSEs at minimum grade C/4 or above to include English Language, Mathematics and Science (including biology, chemistry or physics). A satisfactory academic (university) reference AND a satisfactory professional reference if more than three years since academic study. All candidates must demonstrate professional suitability through interview and must obtain medical and enhanced DBS clearance according to established university procedures.
