On our English PGCE course, you can gain the knowledge and skills to become an inspiring, fully-qualified English teacher./p>This PGCE in English, which has been recognised as 'outstanding' by Ofsted, will give you the opportunity to explore all aspects of English teaching./p>You'll work with curriculum in a stimulating and exciting way, covering topics such as:/p>Shakespeare/li>poetry/li>the novel/li>drama, media and multi-modal approaches/li>As you work towards gaining your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as an English teacher, you’ll develop the theory and practical techniques to teach English to all secondary school pupils./p>You'll build on your existing knowledge of English language and literature, through the course's theoretical foundations and practical focus, and learn the most effective methods for helping young people to:/p>become fluent readers and writers/li>improve their vocabulary and use of grammar/li>understand and enjoy English literature/li>explain, listen and debate/li>Your training will also teach you essential skills such as:/p>managing the classroom/li>monitoring and assessing pupils/li>teaching inclusively so you can meet the needs of all students in your classroom/li>You'll spend at least 120 days in placement schools located in our partnership area, which covers Southampton, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, and the Isle of Wight. Here you’ll observe lessons and work with small groups of pupils, before gradually being introduced to whole-class teaching. /p>You’ll have the support of a school-based mentor and a university-based tutor throughout your placements./p>In addition to the QTS needed to teach in secondary schools in England, Wales and across the world, you'll complete our English PGCE course with a master's-level Postgraduate Certificate of Education./p>
To be eligible, you must hold a 2:2 UK honours degree (or equivalent) in English or a related subject, along with GCSEs in English language and mathematics at a minimum grade of 4/C.
