Occupational therapy is a client-centred profession focused on promoting health and wellbeing through meaningful activities. As an occupational therapist, you will support individuals in participating in the activities they value by adapting environments and tasks to enhance their overall health and wellbeing.

Upon successful completion, you will be eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and professional membership with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

All about the course

  • Philosophy: The course prepares you to promote the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities, and populations through occupation. You will learn to articulate the value of occupation, challenge the status quo, and work inclusively across diverse contexts.
  • Practical Experience: Placements across Greater Manchester will develop your skills in various settings, including contemporary practice areas. You may need to travel up to 90 minutes from your term-time address for placements.

Programme Outcomes:

  • Eligibility to apply for HCPC registration and Royal College of Occupational Therapists membership.
  • Ability to use the protected title of ‘Occupational Therapist’ upon HCPC registration.

How you will learn

Teaching

The programme is guided by UDL principles, offering diverse learning methods to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed for modern practice. Teaching methods include:

  • Practical workshops
  • Practice placements

Assessment

All assessments are mapped to HCPC standards of proficiency, requiring successful completion to qualify as an occupational therapist. Universal Design principles guide assessment selection, allowing you to demonstrate learning in ways that suit your strengths. Assessment types include:

  • Essays/Reports: Demonstrate knowledge and written communication skills.
  • Critically Appraised Topics and Research Proposals/Reports: Show ability to appraise and apply research.
  • Presentations/Vivas: Present ideas and respond to questions in various formats.
  • Creative Work: Demonstrate learning through creative outputs like videos or posters.
  • Portfolios: Develop lifelong learning habits and assess professional development.
  • Practical Assessments: Demonstrate skills in clinical examinations and practice-based scenarios.
  • Practice Placements: The MSc programme includes four assessed placements, all of which must be passed to progress. These placements are integral to your learning and assessment.

This course is suitable for people with a first degree in any subject looking for an accelerated course to prepare them to work as an occupational therapist. We require a 2:1 or above for entry into the programme from a previous first degree completed within 5 years of applying.
