Falmouth University

"Creativity in everything" is what Falmouth is all about. At least that is how it is advertised. The reality is not always as it seems. Which might not have anything to do with Falmouth University in itself but it is part of a much bigger system that definitely does not support creativity. Falmouth University has many great things, high-end facilities and very qualified lecturers. Pianos, drums, practice rooms, everything you'd expect a good music university to have. It just lacks something that is very important to me Soul What do I mean by soul ? I mean freedom, value of your own voice and connection to the land. Productivity is valued more than the process, timetables and deadlines are made in a very unnatural way, and students are left feeling tired, frustrated and stressed out. Every time I have made an attempt of doing something new or have made a remark on how things functioned, it has been shut down or underappreciated as not being "academic" enough or not relevant. On that note, I feel that being challenged is good and the lecturers are definitely there to help you and advise you but I would argue that it shouldn't be in a way that shuts down the students voice. If a student asks me if I would recommend this university I would reply the following: It's in an amazing place, the location in the woods is next to wonderful things and places in nature that are breathtaking. But you will need to comply to rules, ethics and change the way you do your craft. If I knew how it would be I probably would have chosen a different path, one that connects me more to nature than away from it. But it depends what kind of artist you want to be. I would definitely advise it for musicians interested in popular music, that want to improve their skills (even though the practical side isn't as important as I would have hoped). That want to get into the world of being a session musician, composing for media and so forth. But for musicians more into acoustic music, nature based songwriting and soulful music I would advise to study elsewhere. Hope this was helpful for prospective students ! And as always it is always good to make your own point of view on things, so definitely come and have a look and see what feels right for you.

It's great if you benefit from a relaxed atmosphere and a friendly community, but also be pushed to see what you can do creatively. Staff in my department are very helpful and accommodating of individual challenges; they're also impressive musicians and academics and know the industry well. Falmouth Uni has a vibe I haven't found anywhere else; really to see if it's for you just go to an open day and you will know.

The best part for sure is having lecturers that just get it if it makes like they're all super nice and really want us to succeed. Also everyone I've met has been super lovely too. The worst aspects of uni is more money wise because paying washing still feels so ridiculous to me especially £3.60.

I love the facilities it gives me so much space to develop my skills and grow as a performer. The societies are great and I’ve made loads of friends by attending them.

-All the lecturers I have experienced have been great without exception! -The facilities are industry standard. -The location is stunning. -I would only asked their would be more randomised mandatory group projects that would force you to work with people, otherwise people tend to choose solo options out of ease. -Overall a great place to study
