Music - BA (Hons)

BIMM University

Lecturers and wellbeing team are so supportive and down to earth. Curriculum is easy to follow but still challenging. Some modules are a bit unnecessary and feel like a waste of time but I imagine you get that in every course no matter where you’re studying. Only big downfall is the lack of events/societies compared to the bigger unis, they do try to put things on but for some reason they just don’t stick. Quite a few lecturers got let go last year or left due to pay issues as well which is disappointing but overall it’s a good university and the experience is mostly positive.

The access to equipment, the industry professionals helping you through everything & the fellow students I study with.. the only improvements would be extending the course to 3 semesters as it feels like such a short time there & possibly extending the building so there are more room booking options.

Outstanding support and lecturers, I feel informed and generally cared for as an individual. If I were to suggest any improvements , I would suggest more recording rooms or facilities to support actual music creation, the practice rooms are sufficient but can make content or music creation hard as most rooms are prone to noise bleeding and can be very distracting.

BIMM is an incredible opportunity for people who want to learn how to properly step into the music industry. As a Songwriter, I have been learning the essential tools one must familiarise themselves with in order to understand the Industry, as well as themselves. I since starting formed a Band, and gained the confidence to seriously devote myself to music in a professional way, whereas before BIMM I have been dabbling for over 10 years. It is so worth taking the leap, thanks to all the teachers equipped with their own music backgrounds and their keenness to help their students succeed, in all the different ways they come. There really is something to be learned for everyone in every genre, and the way students are learning from each other, simply by being on one another's presence, is something you don't get outside of university generally. We are offered so many opportunities along our way, such as frequent personal sessions with teachers of all trades, student societies, weekly extra guest lectures that range from how to succeed in the music industries to performance and niche topics, weekly feedback sessions for your music (production and songwriting), options to explore other topics such as film, production, theatre and performance, and much more. It really depends how much you devote yourself as a student, how much you get out of studying at BIMM. However, if you really want this, BIMM offers endless opportunities for you to become a professional in your craft without forcing the students into anything. Besides the lectures, teachers are very open to help any student with their personal development in a very human, friendly manner, making us feel seen individually. Understandably, BIMM and their teachers make errors, but (speaking from the perspective of Student Rep and seeing how much attention is being spent on improving the student experience) constructive feedback and betterment for the sake of the student's experience is always welcomed and encouraged. I also feel like I need to add that the wellbeing team within BIMM ( a very active organisation within the campus, offering personal advice, mental health support etc) is very active, and an unexpected pillar for a student to lean on. BIMM understands and embraces that the music industry is hard on the creator's soul, which is something I never expected to be held into account. By now it feels so normal to be not completely normal, with all the support and guidance the wellbeing team offers, in such a way that I feel stronger and more confident than ever to pursuit my dream as a performing, album creating songwriter and musician. I can really recommend anybody considering music as their craft to consider BIMM university (Berlin) and give it all they have in order to absorb all the once in a lifetime preparation for a successful career in the music world.

The lecturers are very nice and knowledgeable. There’s great student support available through the wellbeing hub as well as assessment support and tutorials. Many interesting masterclasses with industry professionals are given. The main point of improvement is the building. The windows need to be completely redone due to a mold problem and some of the air conditioners don’t work properly.
