The Specialist Community Public Health Nursing/Health Visiting/School Nursing MSc (Dissertation top-up) course is for applicants with a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing qualification who wish to additionally undertake a dissertation to achieve a Masters qualification. You will need to apply for the following programme on the Admissions Portal: Specialist Community Public Health Nursing MSc - Dissertation Only (Part-time).

Key benefits

  • You will be studying at the top nursing faculty in the UK, ranked second in the world (2024 QS World University Rankings).
  • Access to lecturers who are active researchers in health visiting and school nursing.
  • Access to extracurricular seminars and lectures given by leaders in healthcare from around the world.
  • Located in the heart of London, across four of Kings Thames-side campuses (Waterloo, Strand, St Thomas and Guys) and the Denmark Hill Campus in South London.

Course essentials

You will undertake core modules in leadership in public health, evidence-based practice, healthcare research, child protection, specialist practice and for health visiting students, nurse prescribing. School nursing students may choose a clinically focussed option after discussion with the pathway leader. These pathways are designed to furnish qualified nurses with the evidence to demonstrate eligibility to register their specialist practitioner status with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC). They may also suit registered practitioners who are supporting autonomous practice, supporting educational and practice development or exercising clinical leadership and who seek further educational opportunities to further this.

Entry requirements

Standard requirements: A minimum 2:1 undergraduate Bachelors (honours) degree. If you have a lower degree classification, or a degree in an unrelated subject, your application may be considered if you can demonstrate significant relevant work experience, or offer a related graduate qualification (such as a Masters or PGDip).

Programme-Specific Requirements: The normal entry requirement for graduate study is a Bachelor's degree with minimum 2:1 honours (or overseas equivalent). Applicants with other backgrounds or qualifications, including those without a first degree, can be considered. If you do not meet the normal entry requirements or you have only the minimum academic standard you should pay particular attention in preparing your supporting statement and CV to ensure that you draw attention to evidence of potential success at graduate level. This might include publications, preparation of substantial reports or active participation in service development initiatives or funded research.  Applicants wishing to enrol on the full MSc pathway (PGDip + dissertation) must have secured sponsorship from a community healthcare organisation for the duration of the programme. Applicants must be a qualified or newly registered level 1 nurse (all branches) or midwife. Applicants wishing to take the dissertation-only module in order to achieve a Master's qualification will already need to have successfully completed the PGDip and should upload details of this on the application form.
