Our Polymer Science and Engineering programme is designed to give you a broad understanding of polymer science and engineering with a focus on the underlying properties and processes of polymers and plastics related to their utilisation in industrial and commercial applications.
Polymer science and engineering is a fast-moving field that has a major impact on the way we live. It allows us to develop ever more sophisticated materials to suit the needs of society and the planet.
Our programme has gained an international reputation as one of the most comprehensive and in-depth programmes specializing in this subject area. Taught by a team of international experts, the programme covers the latest science and engineering of plastics, rubbers and composites including aspects of nanotechnology, biomaterials, recycling and sustainability. Lectures are supplemented by an extensive variety of laboratory exercises, including those within our new polymer processing laboratory (recently refurbished in a £4M development) and the world-leading Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre.
Our MSc Polymer Science and Engineering programme has been designed to meet the requirements of industry and allow progression towards professional chartered status(CEng). It is fully accredited by the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining. (IOM3).
Who should study this programme?
Our MSc Polymer Science and Engineering is suitable for science and engineering graduates who have an interest in polymers and plastics and want to gain a deeper understanding of them, with a view to increasing their career opportunities in this highly employable field. It is also beneficial to scientists, engineers and technicians in industry who work with polymers and plastics and wish to increase their knowledge in this area.
What you'll study
The combination of high-quality lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes combined with learning of research methodologies and planning, plus presentation skills, provides those who successfully complete the programme with a skill-set that is in great demand both within academia and industry, making our MSc graduates highly-employable. For part time students there is the added option of distance learning, supported by recorded lectures.
Your personal and professional development
The Department of Materials is committed to helping you develop the skills and attributes you need to progress successfully in your chosen career. As part of this we pay for all our students to be members of the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3), the professional body for materials scientists and engineers.
Future career prospects
Plastics and Polymers is a huge global industry sector and our graduates are highly sought after and work within roles including process and technology engineering, packaging, recycling and sustainability development, research, technical support and sales across a diverse range of companies.
Many of our master’s degree students continue their studies with us, joining our thriving community of PhD students engaged in materials projects of real-world significance.
