Embrace advances in technology and help to shape the future with this unique masters degree. 3D design and digital manufacturing technologies are advancing at an incredible rate. We live in an age where it is possible to 3D print everything from cars to clothing and even entire houses, with scientists currently exploring the possibility of 3D printing human organs for transplant.?

Gaining this qualification is your chance to be at the forefront of a huge growth area. Multi-national aerospace businesses, major sportswear manufacturers, the health service and more all investing heavily in 3D print technology. This innovative course offers hands-on training in the fascinating field of digital manufacturing and aims to educate and develop industry-ready professionals.?

A wide range of units will develop your skills in computer-aided design, modelling and industrial sustainability. As well as 3D printing, course content has been designed to train students in all aspects of Industry 4.0, and explores The Internet of Things, generative design and even augmented and virtual reality.?

This masters course is positioned at the cutting-edge of technology and examines how UK manufacturing could be transformed through the adoption of industrial digital technologies. As such, as part of this course, you will visit complex technical organisations to witness the impact that is being made.

COURSE INFORMATION

While covering all aspects of digital design and manufacturing, the course will centre around 3D printing (also known as additive manufacturing). The aim of the course is to educate and train work-ready, capable, and equipped professionals who will be better placed to fulfil the requirements of higher-paid positions within Industry 4.0 and contribute to its further research and development.?

Additive manufacturing permits design freedom and allows the creation of geometrically complex objects that cannot be made in any other way. Evolving rapidly, it is now an integral business process in many industries and sectors. On this course, you’ll examine established and recent additive manufacturing technologies with an aim to leverage their capabilities in the creation of new and unique work using a wide range of materials, from plastics to concrete. Modern society expects better products, for more people but with fewer materials. Exploring the concept of circular economy, you’ll learn how to optimise designs to make objects using less material and with consideration for the environment through an evaluation of the product life cycle.??

You’ll also learn how to use Digital 3D scanning to capture the exterior surfaces of objects or environments, recording their shapes and textures. Then, you’ll learn how to post-process and manipulate the data to produce additively manufactured physical replicas of captured objects or to provide missing parts.?

The course is positioned at the cutting-edge of technology and examines how UK manufacturing could be transformed through the adoption of industrial digital technologies (IDT). As such, as part of this course, you will visit complex technical organisations to witness the impact that is being made.

Placement options

The optional industry placement provides you with the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in the workplace. Through this, you’ll gain additional specialist expertise and transferable skills through responsibilities and contributions to the employer’s business.? Following completion of the taught elements of your MSc course, you can gain additional practice credits by working for a minimum of 36 weeks and a maximum of 42 weeks in an industrial setting, relevant to your course.?
