This master's in Clinical Exercise Physiology focuses on using exercise as medicine for treating and managing health conditions and rehabilitating patients recovering from illness. Accredited by the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS), it is one of only two programmes in the UK with this recognition.

Successful completion, including clinical assessments and 140 placement hours, qualifies you to register as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist with AHCS.

You will:

  • Gain an advanced understanding of the pathophysiology and aetiology of various disease states within Clinical Exercise Physiology (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological conditions).
  • Learn to support patients in adopting healthier lifestyles and self-managing long-term health conditions.
  • Develop practical skills in disease marker assessment and exercise prescription.
  • Gain hands-on experience with advanced physiological and health assessment equipment in our Exercise Physiology Laboratory.

All about the course

The MSc programme is full-time and spans three academic trimesters (September to September). The first two trimesters involve classes on Wednesdays and Fridays, with additional support on Thursdays. The third trimester focuses on clinical placement, with scheduling depending on the placement provider.

You can complete the course with a postgraduate certificate (PgCert), postgraduate diploma (PgDip), or master’s (MSc) degree.

Teaching methods vary by module and include:

  • Lectures and seminars by clinicians and academic staff
  • Laboratory-based practical sessions and demonstrations
  • Simulation-based education, including immersive rooms and augmented reality
  • Work-based learning during placement
  • Problem-based learning
  • Online learning materials
  • PC suite-based analytical sessions

  • Clinical Assessment of Competencies (CEP-UK)
  • Case studies (written and oral presentations)

The programme is suited for those interested in applying science in clinical settings to improve health through physiological assessment and exercise. Candidates should be self-motivated, manage time well, and be capable of working independently and as part of a team. An interview may be part of the application process, with further details provided if applicable. Students should have a BSc (Hons) degree with a 2:1 or above in Exercise or Health Sciences, Sport Science, Biological Sciences, or a related field with an emphasis on human physiology.
