Introduction

Chemistry with AI is a rapidly evolving industry, with AI tools such as machine learning, automation, and robotics accelerating chemical discoveries to address key societal needs and global challenges.

Our Chemistry with Artificial Intelligence (AI) MSc is a cross-disciplinary programme that provides Chemistry graduates with expertise in AI, automation, robotics, and digitalisation in research. Students will develop critical digital skills and apply them across a range of chemical contexts, including pure materials, pharmaceuticals, and formulated materials.

Students will have exclusive access to the £81M Materials Innovation Factory, a leading hub for AI-driven Chemistry, automation, and robotics. Introducing students to the fundamentals of chemistry laboratory automation, from creating simulation environments to programming embodied robots for laboratory experiments, takes place in the Central Teaching Laboratory, where outstanding facilities bring hands-on learning to life. The programme also offers valuable industry connections, helping students build professional networks and gain insight into industry applications. Learning is reinforced through authentic assessment, where students complete tasks that simulate real-world scenarios, ensuring they graduate with practical, industry-relevant skills.

Please note: We constantly review and develop our postgraduate programmes. This MSc is also available with the alternative title Digital Chemistry: AI, Machine Learning, Automation and Robotics MSc for entry September 2025. Students have the option to graduate with either of these two MSc titles.

Careers and employability

Upon completion of the MSc in Chemistry with AI, students will be qualified to enter a wide range of employment or pursue further study leading to a PhD.

The pharmaceutical, data science, analytics & informatics and chemical research industries are possible employers of graduates, especially given the anticipated increases in the use of next-generation sequencing and the corresponding data analysis that will be required.

Graduates will also be qualified to enter careers such as finance & banking, software development, teaching and consultancy, where the skills obtained in the degree programme are highly valued.

Occupations linked to students who have studied chemistry in a higher education setting are set to grow across the UK. There is an anticipated growing demand for adaptable scientists who can harness the knowledge and skillsets of digital chemists
